"Riba Nunka" Creating Art Beyond Borders

Filming "Riba Nunka" in Skopje

Recently, I had the unique opportunity to visit Skopje, Macedonia, a destination that provided inspiration for my creative work but also left me with mixed emotions. My trip was centered around exploring the local culture and filming the music video for Riba Nunka from my debut album, 864.

The Approach

From the vibrant streets of Skopje to the serene mountaintop views, we aimed to capture the song’s reflective tone. I decided to shoot the video in a vlog style, blending raw, candid moments with artistic shots. The video is not yet released, but I’m excited for my fans to see the result soon!

A Ride to the Top: Millennium Cross

One unforgettable part of my journey was taking the cable car up Mount Vodno to the Millennium Cross. This iconic landmark towers 66 meters high and offers a panoramic view of Skopje. The 10-minute cable car ride itself was a first for me and added an adventurous touch to the trip. The views from the summit were nothing short of stunning, showcasing the beauty of the city below.

Cultural Observations

Macedonia’s lack of mass tourism made this trip both fascinating and challenging. Being one of the few Black individuals in the area, I often felt like a spectacle. Some locals stared, while others took unsolicited photos or approached me curiously, especially school children who asked for selfies. Even at the airport, I experienced some unkind treatment, which was disheartening. Despite these moments, I focused on the positive aspects of connecting with a new culture and letting the beauty of the country inspire me.

About My Album 864

My debut album, 864, showcases my journey as an artist blending Papiamentu, English, and Dutch in a genre-defining trapsoul style. Each song reflects a deep connection to my roots in Curaçao’s Banda Abou, celebrating its vibrant spirit while breaking stereotypes about the region. Riba Nunka, one of the standout tracks, speaks to resilience—a theme that resonates with me and, I hope, with my listeners.
